Foot Health

by dr.heather on April 23, 2010

Last summer, I posted a blog about my poor aching left foot. Now as the new summer approaches,  sandals and flip flop are making their debut and it’s “Foot Health Awareness,” month,  I thought it would be appropriate do a follow up.

I went to Medline to see what they had to say about foot health. Here are their thoughts:

  • Examine your feet regularly ( ie: get a pedicure*)
  • Wear comfortable shoes ( ie: go shopping!)
  • Wash your feet daily with soap and lukewarm water ( ie: take time to take a bath)
  • Trim your toenails straight cross and not too short (ie: back to the nail salon!*)

I feel like I have interpreted their suggestions quite well!

Let me add some of my thoughts:

  1. The foot has 26 bones, 33 joints and many tendons, muscles, ligaments, nerves and blood vessels.
  2. Our feet have a very important job by carry us throughout our day – letting us get from a to b either walking or running!
  3. All of our standing weight is on our feet, so we need to take care of them and not take them for granted!

Any joint stiffness, tingling or numbness or swelling on your feet, would all  be very good reasons to head to your doctor for further examination. These symptoms may indicate other problems in the body.

Be well,

* When you go to the nail salon, please bring in your own clean nail tools. Nail fungi, which is a common result form a pedicure, is very hard to get rid of and extremely unpleasant.
