It’s summer road ( or maybe boat ) trip time and as a kid, this was my favourite part of the summer. I spent a majority of my summers by the lake either on a boat ( traveling up the St. Lawrence river or on Georgian Bay) or at a cottage. I loved it.
I rarely got sick but now as a mother, I can’t help but be prepared in case someone does get sick… as I have mentioned before, when on holiday, I would rather not be in bed sick or taking care of someone who is. I have a few tips that I would love to share.
Before the trip
Generally, if I see any stressful events approaching – traveling , going back to school after a holiday, or a holiday in general – I begin to re-evaluate what my family is all doing and taking. Below are some my top 4 supplements for staying healthy:
1. Essential Fatty Acids
This is why: They are vital to your being alive as your body can not make them so you need to get them from your food. They are important for optimal function of the heart – think blood pressure, strokes – to the nervous system and the skin.
Source: Olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds but also mix in flax seed oil, cod liver oil and hemp oil in their diet.
This is why: Known as the friendly bacteria in the gut, they aid in keeping the digestive system strong and healthy. Approximately 70% of the immune system is in the digestive system so you are getting lots of support by taking some probiotics.
Source: Some dairy products have added probiotics, but you can also find them in the refrigerated section of your local health food store. One of my favorite brands is HMF by Genestra.

3. Berry Well Immune Herbal Powder
This is why: This herbal powder has many tonifying herbs in its’ formula. I like this because it helps keep our immune system strong during periods of high stress or during the cold and flu season. The fact that it is a powder is an extra bonus because you can easily add it to a smoothie or mix it in with yogurt or applesauce.
4. Innate MaikeGold 404

If on a plane

If someone gets sick
Magic socks: Always travel with cotton and wool socks. You can learn more about how to do magic socks here... I have many people completely hooked on them!
Vitamin C: Vitamin c is best taken in divided doses. Take 500 mg ( less for kids) 3 to 4 times a day.
Immune tincture: Most health food store have an immune tincture or capsules. Take as directed. ( some of my favourite brand is Wise Woman Herbal . They have a fabulous children’s glycerite tincture and capsules for adults. Let me know if you need help ordering.
The key to making sure that you stay healthy after a cold is to keep taking a few supplements for 2 to 3 days after you feel better.
And always remember the basics
Wash those hands: This one is easy to forget ( or at least the kids may need some reminding!). It’s important to remember that most acute illnesses are due to poor hygiene and the easiest way to avoid this, is to wash your hands with soap and warm water.
Keep hydrated: During the summer, we tend to drink more sugary drinks and forget to drink water. Keep a pitcher filled with water available ( in the fridge ) at all times. If water doesn’t sound exciting, try putting slices of oranges and lemons to add some zest and flavor or perhaps making a pitcher of iced herbal tea ( a raspberry Zinger and Tazo Sweet orange are favourites).
